This gorgeous piece of Bates vintage cut velvet fabric blooms in a warm autumnal palette - rich copper, bronze, caramel and honey-gold tones swirl against a deep chocolate-brown background, punctuated by hits of burnt orange, marigold, and olive-yellow, with small jewel-toned accents of forest green and rust-red tucked into the design.The pattern is a dense, baroque-style damask: acanthus-like scrolling leaves and plume-shaped fronds curl and unfurl across the surface, anchored by ornate urn or vase-like forms sprouting stylized blossoms, all in that classic cut-velvet chenille texture where the tufted pile catches light differently across each curve and petal.
It presents as Old World and opulent - the kind of tightly-packed, symmetrical scrollwork you'd associate with grand Victorian or Jacobean-revival upholstery rather than the airier candlewick florals of typical mid-century bedspread chenille.
